From Dessau to Milan:
Thonet presents its tubular steel collection in Milan – extended and with
a contemporary interpretation

The presentation of Thonet at this year's Salone del Mobile (8-13 April 2014) in Milan is entirely about one material: tubular steel. Among the new products are the sideboard program range S 290, which is modelled after a design from the 1930s, the new "Classics in Colour" versions, and the S 1200 desk. The trade fair presentation is rounded off with numerous iconic designs that could not be more modern even today. After a short break, Thonet is pleased to be back in Milan. With the extension of the tubular steel collection, Thonet underscores its claim to care for and strengthen the legacy of the company with classics, contemporary versions and new products in order to bring it into the present and the future.

New products, special editions and the Gallery of Classics: the Thonet tubular steel furniture collection as of April 2014

Alongside numerous classics and the new colours, Thonet presents several new products in Milan: the versatile sideboard program range S 290 was inspired by a historical piece of furniture from the 1930s. The elements of the shelf cabinet can be individually linked, allowing for a wide range of combinations. Developed in-house, the S 1200 desk, which was especially designed as an office area in private homes, will also be a focus in Milan. Other highlights are the side table group B9 by Marcel Breuer and the cantilever table set B 97, which come to the market with glass table tops. The clear and yet very sophisticated LUM luminaire is available in black or white lacquered tubular steel in addition to the classic chrome-plated version, just in time for the Milan trade fair.

Colours are the trend - Thonet's tubular steel furniture with a new look

Red, white, black, chocolate brown, warm grey, grey-green and mustard yellow are the seven attractive colours in which the tubular steel frames of the Mart Stam classic S 43, the lounge chair S 411, the Pure Materials versions of Marcel Breuer's chairs S 32 and S 64, the side table series B 9 and B 97 and the new desk S 1200 are lacquered. "You have to change to remain the same", says the Dutch trend expert Monique van der Reijden: "Reinventing oneself is a trending subject, and this is precisely what Thonet has done with its design classics by presenting the tubular steel frames in a 'state-of-the-art' colour palette." For the development of the seven colours, the Thonet Design Team placed high value on their harmony with the typical Thonet surfaces in wood and stains as well as the fabric and leather covers of the furniture - aware of trends but with durability in mind. In addition, the "Classics in Colour" are a citation of the past: there is proof that furniture with coloured tubular steel was already produced in the 1930s.

A revolution of floating lightness: tubular steel furniture at Thonet

As a pioneer of innovative tubular steel furniture, Thonet recognized the potential of this new material early on: the industrial production and distribution of the innovative furniture by designers Marcel Breuer, Ludwig Mies van der Rohe and Mart Stam as well as numerous in-house designs since the early 1930s made Thonet the biggest tubular steel furniture manufacturer in the world. In the 1920s some of the most important contemporary designers began experimenting with the innovative, mouldable tubular steel material. At the time, tubular steel furniture, with its elementary and functional formal language, represented a new attitude in architecture; today, it is considered a revolutionary achievement in design history and is still among the most popular bestsellers. In the year 2014, Thonet's tubular steel collection impresses with the diversity of classics - and now with new and colourful versions: a classic heritage that remains familiar and surprises with a new look.
