Major Thonet tubular steel exhibition in Rotterdam
“Bauhaus expositie” from 4 October until 21 December 2013
Classic and yet always contemporary: the exhibition “Bauhaus expositie” will open on 4 October 2013 in Rotterdam at the Hartman Binnenhuisadviseurs home furnishing store. The exhibition focuses on Thonet tubular steel classics from the 1920s and 1930s. Most of their designers taught at the Bauhaus. Philipp Thonet, one of the co-owners of the company, which is located in Frankenberg in the north of Hesse in Germany today, will open the exhibition.
Special editions of the furniture classics will be among the displays, such as the tubular steel cantilever chair S 43 by Mart Stam from 1931, which was re-issued in new and fresh colors for the 90th anniversary of the Bauhaus in 2009. Alongside extraordinary pieces of furniture, the exhibition also presents comprehensive information about the designers and the history of tubular steel furniture.
The development of modern tubular steel furniture in the 1920s and 1930s is considered a milestone in the history of modern furniture. At the time, Thonet became the largest producer of tubular steel furniture in the world. Designs by famous designers such as Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, Marcel Breuer and Mart Stam were added to the Thonet collection. The invention of the cantilever chair without back legs is regarded as one of the most important design innovations of the 20th century.
